Seizure First Aid:

  • Always stay calm
  • Always track the amount of time the seizure lasts
  • Never put anything in the person's mouth
  • Do not perform mouth to mouth resuscitation during a seizure (breathing can be naturally depressed during a generalized tonic clonic seizure and usually begins again without assistance)

Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizure:

  • Protect their head
  • Turn the person on their side to prevent choking
  • Check for a seizure disorder medical ID tag
  • Remain with them until they have gained full awareness
  • If seizure lasts more than five minutes, call 911

Focal Impaired Awareness Seizure:

  • Do not restrain
  • Gently direct the person away from hazards
  • Check for a seizure disorder medical ID tag
  • Remain with  them until they have gained full awareness
  • If seizure lasts more than five minutes, call 911
